Hannah Woodall Marking Sampler
English, 1851
Embroidered black thread on linen cloth, 11 ½ x 9 inches, framed 14 x 11 inches
This marking sampler by Hannah Woodall is in very good condition. The monochromatic treatment makes this a standout example of collectable needlework. Unlike pictorial samplers, marking samplers weren’t meant to be displayed. Instead, their purpose was to practice and demonstrate a young girl’s skill in the art of stitching letters and numbers. Neat edges and clean stitching were applied to finished marking samplers deeming a young girl’s skill in her alphabets and numbers.
