Fort Niagara
American, circa 1812
Oil on canvas, 20 ¾ x 27 inches, in gilt frame, 24 ½ x 30 ½
A fine view of the Niagara river and fort from the Canadian side. Fort Niagara, also known as Old Fort Niagara, was originally built by New France to protect its interests in North America and control access between the Niagara River, Lake Ontario, and the westward route into the continent. The French established the first post in 1679. Britain gained control of the fort in 1759 during the French and Indian War and maintained control throughout the American Revolution, yielding it to the United States in 1796. The fort was captured by the British during the War of 1812 until it was ceded again to the United States in 1815, after which time it served as a peaceful border post.
