A Clews historic Staffordshire transfer print earthenware platter, hard paste from the “Picturesque Views” series, The platter is entitled en verso, with impressed mark ‘Clews Warranted Staffordshire’ with crown in center.
James and Ralph Clews produced Picturesque Views of the Hudson River series for the American market. This example is printed in underglaze brown, but it was also printed in black, light blue, pink (red) and purple. The images of the Hudson River area were taken from W.G. Walls’s Hudson River Portfolio, issued through subscription between 1821 and 1825.
