Hudson Valley Painted Blanket Chest
Hudson Valley, New York, circa 1800
Pine with old blue paint, 44 ¼ x 18 ¼ x 19 inches

A handsome Hudson Valley blanket chest of pleasingly simple form, dovetailed in pine, raised on small shoe feet and finished with molded edges at the lid and base. The restrained construction gives the proportions and deep blue painted surface room to speak for themselves.

The chest retains its interior till and shows expected wear from use, particularly across the lid. The original rat-tail hinges have been replaced with butt hinges, and the lock is no longer present. Simply made and entirely practical, it has just enough detail to make it memorable.
