Folk Art Rooster Weathervane
American, circa 1900
Painted wood and iron
32 × 17½ inches

A wonderfully straightforward bit of American folk art, this rooster weathervane combines a boldly shaped wooden bird with a long directional arrow and simple ironwork. The old red and blue painted surfaces have mellowed and worn with years of exposure, giving the piece much of its character. There is something particularly appealing about the economy of it all—a few pieces of wood, some iron, and just enough imagination to put a rooster in the wind.
